SeKaf Ghana Limited is a Ghanaian owned and operated social enterprise that aims to be an innovative leader in the global shea industry by using a world-class system of processing, packaging, quality control and logistics to deliver to our customers the finest raw ingredients and shea based bath and beauty products sourced through an environmentally friendly and ethical supply chain. SeKaf Ghana Limited is committed to improve the economic status of rural women shea pickers and shea butter processors in northern Ghana through innovative and sustainable employment.
SeKaf Ghana Limited operates in three segments: the SeKaf Shea Butter Village, agricultural services, and shea consultancy.
The SeKaf Shea Butter Village segment develops and manages organic and conventional shea fields and collaborates with women’s cooperatives at the grassroots level to process premium quality unrefined shea butter (organic certified, traceable, and conventional) in a fully traceable and controlled system, which is then sold to cosmetic companies worldwide. This segment also specializes in producing SeKaf’s natural shea based bath and beauty products under the brand name TAMA®. The agricultural services segment procures and transports raw material for multinational agro-processing firms in the shea and cashew industries. This segment also trades in agricultural commodities such as shea nuts, soya beans and sesame seeds. The shea consultancy segment involves training groups and individual clients on improved production techniques for processing premium shea kernels and premium artisanal shea butter. This segment also brokers specialty fats (Cocoa Butter Equivalent, shea stearin and shea olein) for confectionery and cosmetics manufacturers.
SeKaf Ghana Limited was founded in 2003 and is based in Tamale, Ghana.
Senyo Kpelly and Michael Kafui Bulla founded SeKaf Ghana Limited in 2003. Senyo and Michael are high school mates and their vision for SeKaf Ghana Ltd. is to become an innovative leader in the global shea industry that uses a world-class system of processing, packaging, quality control and logistics to deliver to its customers the finest raw shea ingredients and shea based bath and beauty products sourced through an environmentally friendly and ethical supply chain.
Founded in 2003 as an export company with a varied portfolio of West African raw materials, SeKaf Ghana Ltd. began to specialize in shea in 2004. In 2006, it became a social enterprise with a focus on improving the economic status of rural women shea pickers and shea processors. The company inaugurated the SeKaf Shea Butter Village in Kasalgu, Tamale, in August 2008 where surrounding village women assemble and process premium quality unrefined shea butter in a controlled environment. SeKaf collaborates closely with the SeKaf Shea Butter Village’s women’s cooperative and currently buys shea nuts and shea butter from approximately 2,500 women.
Now a fast growing business, SeKaf practices the triple bottom line concept by:
- Purchasing community traded shea nuts to make the company’s TAMA® shea butter bath and beauty products;
- Employing local village women to produce premium unrefined shea butter that are used in TAMA® products;
- Selling TAMA® products at affordable retail prices to Ghanaians and exporting the rest of the shea butter and shea oil in bulk volume to international cosmetic companies.
